Ivan Juric has officially commenced his tenure at Southampton. The Croatian manager faces the challenge of preserving the Saints’ top-flight status, a feat that has historically not been achieved from their current league position in the Premier League. Following the conclusion of his playing career at Genoa, Juric’s entire managerial experience has been within Italy. He has led six different clubs across Italy’s top three divisions, notably including Hellas Verona, Torino, and most recently, Roma. Supporters of the Saints might harbor reservations regarding Juric’s abilities, stemming from his recent period at Roma. The 49-year-old was relieved of his duties last month, having secured only four victories in 12 matches while in the capital. However, it is worth noting that Roma’s ownership has dismissed three managers in 2024 alone, suggesting a potential argument that Juric may not have been afforded sufficient opportunity to make his mark. Juric possesses a notable aptitude for enhancing the performance of teams situated near the lower end of the league standings, a quality likely to be welcomed by many Southampton supporters. In 2019, he assumed control of newly promoted Hellas Verona, subsequently leading them to consecutive top-half finishes in Serie A. Subsequent to his tenure in Verona, Juric transitioned to Torino. The club, which had concluded the two preceding seasons in 16th and 17th place respectively, proceeded to achieve top-half finishes in three consecutive seasons under his guidance. Therefore, notwithstanding the challenges encountered at Roma, Juric’s established expertise over recent seasons has been in elevating teams from the lower echelons of the table to a position of mid-table stability. Nevertheless, the assignment awaiting him at St Mary’s may prove to be the most formidable of his career.
