The Stoke-on-Trent City Council has indicated that the initial phase of a project aimed at revitalizing a former industrial area is nearing its conclusion. This phase includes a new public square and associated green spaces at the Goods Yard, which are anticipated to be completed by spring. The council stated that this location is designed to provide adaptable space for events such as live music performances, temporary markets, and social gatherings. The broader Goods Yard development represents one of three initiatives for which the city council successfully obtained funding through the previous government’s Levelling Up fund. In March, the council announced its search for a private developer to assist with the Etruscan Square scheme, having determined it could not independently finance the project in Hanley. The Labour administration of the authority cancelled proposals for an arena at the site in October 2023. In a separate development, plans received approval in August for the redevelopment of the Spode site, aiming to establish a creative technology hub. Developer Capital & Centric stated its efforts to secure independent businesses to occupy the 30,000 sq ft (2,787 sq m) of commercial space available at Goods Yard. The firm also recently executed a lease agreement for the residential structure on the site, which will encompass 174 apartments. Tom Wilmot, the firm’s joint managing director, commented: “As we get closer to the neighbourhood opening, we’re focused on creating the right mix of community and independent businesses to bring the place to life.” Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, the council’s cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, asserted that the project would yield economic advantages for the city. He further stated: “I am sure that the whole of Stoke-on-Trent is as excited as I am to see the finished site come to life.” For updates, follow BBC Stoke & Staffordshire across BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
