The government has pledged £20 million for a £1 billion cyber facility. This project, known as the Golden Valley Development, is slated for construction on land adjacent to GCHQ in Cheltenham, with the goal of positioning the town as the United Kingdom’s primary cyber hub. Cheltenham Borough Council had initially secured this funding during the third round of the prior government’s Levelling Up Fund. However, the definitive confirmation that these funds would be allocated under the current government’s initiatives was received following the budget announcement on October 30. This development is projected to generate 12,000 new employment opportunities and over 1,000 residential units. With this confirmation, the council can now commence accessing the funds to proceed with the initial stage of the development. A communication from Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner indicated that the government intends to safeguard projects managed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government that were “announced in rounds one to three of the Levelling Up Fund, recognising that many of these projects will unlock vital local growth and regeneration across the country”. Rowena Hay, Leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, stated: “(The centre) will be a national asset that has the potential to build on Cheltenham’s place as a global leader in technology and security.“Now we have confirmation we can continue to realise the vision and ambition of the Golden Valley Development and we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to bring this transformative project to life.” In June, the developer Henry Boot confirmed that architects Sheppard Robson would oversee the design of two buildings for the second phase of the initiative.
