The conventional “shout auction” method employed at Peterhead fish market is scheduled to be superseded by an electronic system. The market, located in the Aberdeenshire town and recognized as the UK’s largest fishing port, has historically adhered to the traditional approach where buyers verbally submit their bids for boxes of fish. Peterhead Port Authority (PPA) initiated a consultation concerning the potential introduction of an electronic auction, which would facilitate fish purchases by buyers without requiring their physical presence. The PPA board has now granted approval for the implementation of the electronic auction within the fish market. PPA reported that the consultation indicated “overwhelming” support for the electronic auction’s adoption, a practice common in numerous other markets. Chief executive Graeme Reid commented: “This is an exciting moment for the port and Peterhead community.” He added: “Peterhead Port Authority has invested around £70m on facilities in the port in the last 10 years, and this next investment will further reinforce and future-proof Peterhead Port’s position as the leading fish port in Europe.” Reid stated that they were satisfied that resolutions had been found for any potential concerns that were raised. The new system is slated to become operational in early Spring 2026.
