Rail services experienced cancellations due to a lack of personnel on a branch line that had officially recommenced operations earlier in the day, following a week of maintenance. The route, which connects Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier in Hampshire, had been closed on 26 October for the replacement of approximately a mile (1.6km) of track. Initially, Network Rail had announced that services had resumed. However, South Western Railway (SWR) subsequently reported that no trains were running, attributing this to staff shortages. In a later update, SWR stated that some trains were operating, though it cautioned that services might be subject to cancellations or revisions until 19:00 GMT. SWR also confirmed that rail replacement buses had been arranged, commencing at 15:45. The company issued a statement: “We apologise for the disruption and are encouraging customers to check before travelling on this route by using a journey planner.” Network Rail had previously indicated that the week-long track work was essential for the line’s reliability. The route is scheduled for another closure from 21 December to 6 January 2025, for improvements to the rail viaduct situated over the Lymington River. This 5.5-mile (9km) branch line traverses the New Forest, providing a connection between the main line at Brockenhurst and the Isle of Wight ferry services at Lymington Pier.
