Rail services have resumed between Newquay and Par in Cornwall, following the completion of emergency repairs by Network Rail. For a period of two weeks, engineers were engaged in rebuilding a retaining wall situated on an embankment close to the Pontsmill viaduct. This wall had collapsed into the river beneath the railway track, causing a substantial displacement of ballast. Chris Fuoco, who serves as Network Rail’s director for Devon and Cornwall, issued a statement: “We thank passengers for their patience while we completed the urgent repairs on the line between Par and Newquay.” He added, “We worked as quickly as possible to repair the railway and ensure your journeys remain safe.” These repair efforts were distinct from the ongoing engineering work associated with the Mid Cornwall Metro project. That particular scheme, projected for completion in 2026, aims to establish a direct rail connection between Newquay and Falmouth.
