Cambridge United manager Garry Monk has stated his team must secure “a lot more wins” akin to their 4-1 triumph over Shrewsbury Town if they are to retain their position in League One. This recent victory marked only the eighth win in 35 matches since Monk took charge. The U’s secured an impressive 4-1 win against a fellow struggling team on Saturday, marking their first league victory since October. Despite remaining in the bottom four, this result positioned them three points behind Crawley, who are currently just above the relegation zone. Speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Monk remarked, “I think it proved again we’ve got a really good group of lads here. They’ve got a really good attitude and spirit amongst them.” Following a 3-0 loss to Reading in their preceding match, Monk had anticipated a “huge” reaction from his squad for the Shrewsbury fixture. His team indeed delivered, with Shayne Lavery’s goal in the first minute setting the U’s on course. Lavery extended the lead before the half-time whistle, and subsequent goals from Dan Nlundulu and Elias Kachunga guaranteed a satisfied home crowd departing the blustery Abbey Stadium. Monk commented, “It was so important to get a good start and, once we did, the crowd came with us.” He continued, “We’re trying to break it down into smaller parts – the next game and also the week [overall] and we had a setback on Tuesday [against Reading].” Monk further added, “It was important, not just where we are the league and the opposition, and we needed a response.” “It’s one win for us – but a good one and we need a lot more like that, especially at home,” he stated. He concluded, “I’m just really really pleased about the response from the players.” “We did both sides of the game more than well enough to deservedly win,” Monk affirmed.
