Kent Police is issuing a reminder to motorists regarding the hazards associated with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as the Christmas period approaches. The police force is participating in a nationwide initiative scheduled from 1 December 2024 to 1 January 2025, which seeks to decrease the incidence of deaths and severe injuries resulting from road collisions. Operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs constitutes one of the “fatal factors” identified by law enforcement. Additional primary risks to drivers include excessive speed, inattention while driving, and failing to use a seatbelt. Kent Police stated that any motorist found committing a moving traffic violation should anticipate being subjected to a breath test or drug screening. In the previous Christmas campaign of 2023, 392 individuals were apprehended in Kent on suspicion of drink and/or drug driving offenses. A conviction for such an offense carries potential penalties including a driving disqualification of at least one year, an unlimited monetary penalty, and a prison sentence of up to six months. Individuals responsible for a fatality while impaired by alcohol or drugs face the possibility of a life imprisonment sentence. Personnel from the Roads Policing Unit will additionally conduct routine traffic patrols and intercede with any vehicles suspected of being operated by an impaired driver. Chief Inspector Craig West commented: “Drinking alcohol or taking drugs before getting behind the wheel is an incredibly reckless and irresponsible thing to do and there is simply no excuse for it.” He added: “Please remember to act responsibly, do not put yourself and others at risk, and leave your car at home if you are planning to have a drink.”
