A donkey sanctuary has reported that its facility is at capacity, making it difficult to place animals in new homes. Durham Donkey Rescue primarily accepts animals rescued from the north-east England region. The organization is currently caring for 24 donkeys, exceeding its intended capacity of approximately 20. Ian Emmerson, the head of the charity, stated: “We’ve only been a charity for two years and it’s been non-stop trying to build new shelters and make things work.” Mr. Emmerson noted that the charity maintains stringent criteria for rehoming donkeys, explaining: “When you’ve got the right person, they will take notice what you say.” Mr. Emmerson established the charity two years prior, following his retirement, initially intending the work to be part-time; however, it now occupies the majority of his time. He explained that the charity exclusively rehomes donkeys with individuals who either already own donkeys or are prepared to adopt them in pairs. He remarked: “When you put a donkey that’s been on their own with another donkey you can see it almost lift them.” He added: “Hopefully [the number] last year was just a blip… because otherwise it would be dangerous and I don’t know whether we would be able to cope.”
