The City of York Council has reversed its earlier restrictions, permitting disabled drivers to park nearer to a Christmas market. Previously, the council had prohibited all vehicles, including those of Blue Badge holders, from parking in the city centre during the operating hours of the St Nicholas Fair this season. Following advocacy from disability campaigners, the council has consented to re-establish restricted access through Goodramgate, while other access points will continue to be closed. Councillor Kate Ravilious stated during a meeting that the objective was to “work towards access throughout the day for next year’s market”. The council explained that its concerns regarding vehicle access stemmed from potential risks to pedestrian safety, particularly during periods of increased footfall attributed to the markets. Ms Ravilious further commented: “We are meeting Make It York next week, and we are committed to try and enable Blue Badge access through the entire market next year.” She confirmed that the council had consented to allow Blue Badge holders to enter through the sliding barriers at Goodramgate between 17:00 and 10:30 GMT for the duration of the Christmas market. The barrier will be staffed, and Blue Badges will be verified from 17:00 to 19:00. During this two-hour interval, Blue Badge holders will have access solely to Goodramgate and Colliergate, with parking restricted to Goodramgate. The St Nicholas Fair commenced on 14 November and is scheduled to conclude on 22 December. Vehicle access to the city centre via Lendal, Blake Street, and Church Street remains prohibited between 10:30 and 19:00 BST.
