A 60-year-old individual is preparing to embark on a solo circumnavigation of the globe aboard a vessel he constructed, despite lacking prior boat-building expertise. Adam Waugh, who resides in Bolam, Northumberland, has previously only navigated waters within the UK and traversed France’s Bay of Biscay. He stated, “This journey will be a true test of endurance, skill, and resilience, but I couldn’t be more excited.” His departure point will be Portugal, commencing a 14-month global voyage covering a distance of 28,000 nautical miles. Mr. Waugh is participating in the Mini Globe Race, an event featuring 15 individuals globally, where contestants will navigate identical Class Globe 580 vessels. He constructed his 19ft (5.8m) vessel, named Little Wren, from plywood within his garden shed, having no prior experience in boat construction. He commented, “I was doing 99% of the work on my own, so it was quite gruelling at times and quite lonely.” Mr. Waugh departed his Northumberland residence for Portugal earlier this week to finalize preparations before his scheduled departure for Antigua on 28 December. He remarked, “I think there is a little bit of ignorance is bliss.” For the past 18 months, a sports psychologist has provided support in conjunction with his physical training regimen. Mr. Waugh indicated that there would “undoubtedly” be “very difficult days,” but the prospect of raising funds for the Ella Dawson Foundation served as a “huge incentive.” The charitable organization, established in remembrance of Newcastle University student Ella Dawson, offers assistance to young adults and their families affected by cancer. Miss Dawson passed away in 2021 at the age of 24 due to an aggressive type of blood cancer, leading her family to establish the charity the subsequent year. Her sister, Natasha, commented, “She was definitely one for adventure, so she would be in massive support of such an inspiring and crazy challenge.”
