The re-submission of plans to demolish a former university teaching block has occurred, following the expiration of prior approval. The University of Sunderland had received authorization in 2020 to dismantle the Forster Building, situated off Chester Road. This location was initially designated for approximately 260 student apartments, including retail spaces on the ground floor. Nevertheless, construction did not commence. Should Sunderland City Council endorse the renewed application, work is projected to start in February and conclude by May. A statement supporting the proposal, presented to council officials by the university, indicates that the building’s structures are “not unsafe or uninhabitable”. It further states that demolition is required “as part of the wider works for the University of Sunderland to better their educational facilities”. At present, no redevelopment plans for the site have been put forward, and the area would be “securely fenced off”. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the structure was erected in 1975, comprises four storeys, and includes car parking facilities. It is believed to have remained vacant since 2017.
