A public engagement process has commenced regarding proposals to enhance a significant road intersection in Huddersfield. Kirklees Council aims to modernize the Cooper Bridge junction, connecting the A62 and A644, with the goal of alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing air quality. Earlier proposals for developing this location, along with the adjacent Bradley Junction, were introduced in 2021 but were subsequently abandoned because of “escalating costs,” according to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). The WYCA and Kirklees Council have now presented three options, exclusively concentrating on the Cooper Bridge vicinity, with the public consultation scheduled to conclude on December 8. All three proposed alternatives—a roundabout, a gyratory system, or a T-Junction—incorporate road widening, the addition of new cycle lanes, and enhancements for pedestrians. Moses Crook, Kirklees’ cabinet member for transport and housing, stated: “The Cooper Bridge junction is a significant gateway into Kirklees and the wider region. “Each of the proposals will ensure better connections to employment and leisure opportunities, encourage further investment and boost housing growth across West Yorkshire and beyond.”” This initiative forms part of a broader program of road infrastructure enhancements throughout Kirklees and receives funding from the WYCA’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport fund. The Transport Fund aims at “enabling key development areas” and is projected to generate approximately 20,000 new jobs and foster economic growth, as further indicated by the WYCA. Crook further urged: “I encourage as many people as possible to get involved in the latest round of consultation, especially locally from those who will be most affected by the scheme.” The WYCA confirmed that work to enhance Bradley Junction is planned for a subsequent time.
