Armed police in Worcestershire fatally shot a man. West Mercia Police reported that paramedics contacted officers regarding an address in Fownhope Close, Redditch, around 14:00 GMT on Christmas Eve due to safety concerns for a man armed with a knife. The force further stated that a police negotiator engaged in efforts to de-escalate the situation for several hours; however, the man was shot at approximately 19:40 GMT and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. West Mercia Police confirmed it has referred the incident to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC). No other individuals were present at the address during the event. Assistant Chief Constable Grant Wills commented, “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected at this difficult time.” He further stated: “We do not underestimate the shock and concern this may cause the local community and I want to reassure residents that we are following all appropriate procedures, this included making an immediate referral to the IOPC, as is mandatory and right.” Wills affirmed that the force would cooperate with the investigation, which will involve supplying body worn camera footage. West Mercia Police indicated it is unable to provide additional comments while the investigation is ongoing.
