An individual taken into custody on suspicion of murder, related to the death of a man a decade after an assault that resulted in his paralysis, has been granted bail. Stuart Coldicott sustained head injuries in Colchester on February 11, 2014, at the age of 36, which necessitated “complex daily care.” Following Mr. Coldicott’s passing in March of the current year, Essex Police initiated a homicide inquiry, stating that a “causal link” existed between his death and the earlier assault. The police force verified that a 61-year-old man, apprehended in the city on November 11, has been released on police bail, valid until December. Mr. Coldicott, described as someone who “put a smile on everyone’s faces,” passed away at 46 years old. The initial police investigation, commenced in 2014 following the assault on Mr. Coldicott, concentrated on the areas of Barrack Street and Harsnett Road in Colchester. Surveillance camera footage underwent review, and a mobile police station was established. During that period, the authorities determined that the injuries he sustained were probably the outcome of a “serious assault,” though they could not definitively prove it. Detective Inspector Lydia George, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, stated: “The injuries Stuart sustained had a significant and long-lasting impact on him and, of course, his family.” She added: “When Stuart died and a causal link to the head injury was established, we began treating his death as a homicide and our fresh investigation was launched.” A statement released by Mr. Coldicott’s family honored him as a “dearly-loved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, son and friend to everyone that knew him.” The family’s statement further conveyed: “Stewie sustained a serious head injury, which resulted in him become a paraplegic.” It continued: “Although this horrific incident happened to him, he never lost his naughty sense of humour that put a smile on everyone’s faces.” The statement concluded: “Nobody could replace him, and he will always remain in our hearts.“All the family members and friends will greatly miss Stewie very much and our mischievous family member is gone from this world but not from our hearts.” Updates on Essex news are available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
