London Mayor Opposes Further Driverless Tube Train Development

The Mayor of London has stated that efforts to implement driverless trains on the London Underground system “shouldn’t be progressed any further”. Responding to a written inquiry from Alex Wilson, a London Assembly member representing Reform UK, Sadiq Khan indicated that such an undertaking would incur costs amounting to billions of pounds for each line. In 2020, Boris Johnson, who was then prime minister, had asserted that the introduction of driverless trains ought to be a prerequisite for any subsequent funding allocated to Transport for London. The RMT union was contacted for a statement; however, in 2014, the Aslef drivers’ union had pledged to “go to war” concerning proposals for their implementation.
