Pedro Martinez Losa’s disappointing period as Scotland boss concluded following a defeat by a Finland side ranked three positions lower. However, these relative standings were influenced by Scotland’s recent matches against weaker opponents, while Marko Saloranta’s team was being relegated from the more challenging League A. His departure appeared unavoidable given Scotland’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive major finals, with two of these instances occurring during his leadership. Former Scotland midfielder Leanne Crichton believes that scrutiny was always to be expected, considering the Spaniard had been tasked with ending the nation’s major tournament drought. “For Pedro, it was a mixed bag,” she told BBC Scotland. “If you look at some of the achievements and identity of the team, it started to change and at points it looked really positive, but for any national team manager, it’s getting to major tournaments and, when you don’t do that, ultimately it looks like a failure.” In the current landscape of football, there is a constant expectation that managers will lose their positions if they do not fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them.
