The burial service for Harshita Brella, whose remains were located in the trunk of a vehicle in east London, was conducted in India. Law enforcement authorities suspect the 24-year-old was fatally strangled in Corby, Northamptonshire, on November 10, and have identified her 23-year-old husband, Pankaj Lamba, as the primary suspect in their ongoing murder inquiry. Numerous individuals gathered outside Ms. Brella’s family residence in Delhi as her coffin was interred, occurring eight months after her departure to begin a new life in the United Kingdom. Narender Singh, Ms. Brella’s uncle, stated: “We want justice. We want the murderer to receive the maximum punishment possible.” Mr. Singh, aged 44, further expressed the family’s frustration regarding the speed of the investigation and what they perceived as insufficient information. Sonia Dabas, Ms. Brella’s older sister, commented: “I’ve always protected her but I just can’t understand how she’s no longer here. “I should have been in her place.”I will fight [for justice for Harshita]. I have all the strength to fight. I don’t have any excuse not [to] pursue this fight.” According to Ms. Brella’s family, she and Mr. Lamba had entered into an arranged marriage, with their legal wedding ceremony taking place in August 2023. The couple celebrated their traditional Indian ceremony on March 22 of this year, subsequently departing for the UK around April 30 and establishing residence in Corby. On November 13, officers from Northamptonshire Police attended Ms. Brella’s residence on Skegness Walk in Corby, prompted by concerns regarding her well-being. Upon failing to locate her, an investigation into her disappearance was initiated. Ms. Brella’s remains were found in the trunk of a vehicle situated on Brisbane Road, Ilford. Authorities have subsequently disseminated photographs depicting Mr. Lamba in the Ilford vicinity and the couple walking close to Corby’s boating lake. Ms. Brella had previously experienced domestic violence and was issued a Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO) in September. Northamptonshire Police self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to its prior interactions with her. Law enforcement suspects Mr. Lamba has departed the country, leading to an ongoing international search operation. Further reporting was contributed by Adnan Bhat and Aakriti Thapar.
