An electric van, characterized by the Post Office as a “mobile branch,” has begun operations in the East of England. This vehicle, which is expected to serve 17 rural communities throughout Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Essex, is fitted with solar panels to power its computer system, lights, and heating. It will be managed by the Post Office at Finchingfield, in Essex, and takes the place of a diesel vehicle. Postmistress Alex Robinson commented: “Now we have tested the vehicle, our initial range anxiety has subsided, and our confidence [has] grown.” This electric van, representing only the second one introduced by the Post Office, is capable of covering approximately 100 miles (161km). Ms Robinson, who operates the Finchingfield branch with Jane Welsh, indicated that they are familiar with all the alternative routes to the villages the van will travel to. She further stated: “We have plenty of range for all the places we visit, even in the middle of winter or if there is unexpected traffic.” A spokesperson for the Post Office affirmed that electric mobile offices are more environmentally sound and less expensive to operate than their diesel counterparts. They also mentioned that the mobile branch welcomes dogs. The spokesperson added: “Many of the communities that the Finchingfield mobile Post Office call at have lots of dog owners, and they take their pets with them to visit the Post Office.” The Post Office’s first electric mobile branch was launched in Pembrokeshire, Wales, earlier in the summer.
