A public consultation has been initiated to gather opinions regarding the proposal to designate the song Beautiful Jersey as the official anthem of the island. The Government of Jersey announced that this consultation, commencing on Monday, will remain active until 18 January 2025. Additionally, ministers have requested feedback on the recognition of Liberation Day as the island’s national day, particularly in anticipation of its 80th anniversary. Deputy Carolyn Labey, who serves as the Minister for International Development, expressed her desire to officially establish both a national day and a Jersey anthem prior to Liberation Day 2025. In 2008, the song Island Home by Gerard Le Feuvre was selected as Jersey’s official anthem during a special event held at the Jersey Opera House. However, Ms Labey noted that Beautiful Jersey is “already viewed by many” as the island’s anthem, stating that it has been performed at events “for some time.” She further clarified, “However, it has never been officially agreed as such.” The current national anthem for the island is God Save the King. Ms Labey stated that formalizing 9 May as an official national day would not alter the existing celebrations of Liberation Day. She added, “But it will help jurisdictions around the world better understand its importance to islanders.” “We hope to strengthen a sense of community and citizenship in Jersey through this consultation, while also commemorating our heritage and history.” For updates, follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
