Three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the possession of offensive weapons, following the evacuation of Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station. Police reported that the bomb squad was summoned at 13:10 due to alerts regarding a suspicious package. However, after a controlled explosion was conducted, no suspicious items were discovered. The incident resulted in a day of significant disruption across the city centre and for public transport services operating to and from Glasgow. The bus station and the adjacent Killermont Street remained closed through Wednesday night, with train services at the nearby Queen Street Station also experiencing impacts. A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed: “As a precaution the bus station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.” They further added that “Three men were arrested in connection with possession of offensive weapons and inquiries are ongoing.” Students and staff at Glasgow Caledonian University, located directly across from the bus station, were also evacuated as a precautionary measure. Around 20:30, ScotRail suspended train operations at Glasgow Queen Street, stating: “Until the police deem it safe to run trains again, no trains will run into and out of Glasgow Queen Street High Level.” Trains from Queen Street traverse a tunnel situated beneath Killermont Street and the bus station. Services recommenced after 21:00. The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, also situated on Killermont Street, announced the cancellation of performances, attributing it to “circumstances beyond our control”. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), the operator of the bus station, issued an apology for the extensive disruption at what is Scotland’s busiest bus terminal. Stagecoach, First Bus, McGill’s, and several other bus companies utilize the station. First reported that “multiple services are diverting” and that bus operators were using alternative city centre streets for passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. Citylink, which operates longer-distance bus routes, confirmed its services were departing from North Hanover Street. Passengers were advised to check with their respective operators for information on how services had been affected.
