Gael Clichy: Chelsea Face Failure Without Title Victory

Gael Clichy, a former defender for Manchester City and Arsenal, has asserted that “anything other than winning the title would be a failure” for Chelsea. This declaration comes as Enzo Maresca’s team occupies second place in the league standings following 15 matches, trailing leaders Liverpool by four points. Speaking on this week’s Planet Premier League podcast, Clichy, a three-time title winner, emphasized that Chelsea, often referred to as the Blues, should be regarded as title contenders, considering the substantial financial investment they have made. Clichy further elaborated on his perspective, stating: “Now they are second and the questions are starting: ‘Are you a title contender?’, and I’ve seen the coach saying: ‘We’re not there yet’. Well, my friend, if you’re not there after £1 billion spent over the past two years, nobody is a title contender. Your ambitions are just matched by the money you spend – and if you look at the money they’re spending, of course they have to win it. Anything other than winning the title would be a failure in my opinion.”
