A proposal has been lodged for an arts and theatre facility intended to host events throughout Bradford’s City of Culture year. An application submitted to Bradford Council indicates that transforming the former Marks & Spencer storage facility located on Piccadilly is considered “vital to the success” of the Bradford 2025 initiative. The Bradford Culture Company acquired the building last month; this structure was previously connected to the former Marks & Spencer store on Darley Street via a bridge. The submitted plans declare: “This building has been identified as one of the key sites that will be capable of delivering BD25’s ambitious programme throughout 2025, but also lead to a legacy of arts and culture for the years after.” The previous department store was demolished to facilitate the construction of Darley Street Market, scheduled to open next year. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that the storage building was among several properties acquired by Bradford Council for the market development, and it has been utilized by contractors involved in the market’s construction. The facility, which will offer access from Duke Street, is planned to feature a 200-seat theatre on its ground floor, a gallery on the first floor, and arts studios spanning the second and third floors. The basement level is designated to become an event area accommodating up to 250 individuals, while an exterior yard will accommodate food and drink vendors during significant events. The planning application states: “The venue will become a hub for arts and culture activities throughout 2025 and create a legacy in the sector for many years after.“The building is currently empty and due to its unique nature is not particularly well suited to future conversion for commercial or residential uses.“This is therefore a fantastic opportunity to develop the site for community-based uses and create a long-lasting legacy.” A determination regarding the application is anticipated next month.
