Jofra Archer is set to participate in the Indian Premier League auction, despite his initial exclusion from the preliminary list. The fast bowler from England had been included on the longlist but was subsequently absent from the 574 names announced last week as eligible for the auction. The reason for Archer’s apparent withdrawal remained unclear, although it appeared there was some misunderstanding regarding his future involvement in the IPL if he did not participate in the auction scheduled for 24 and 25 November in Saudi Arabia. According to new regulations, any player with prior IPL experience, which includes Archer, would face a two-year exclusion from the competition if they failed to enter the auction. The 29-year-old has faced a prolonged struggle with injuries since 2020, but England’s management has been cautious with him following an elbow issue setback last summer. Since May, he has consistently featured in England’s white-ball squad and has expressed his wish to resume playing Test cricket, a format he has not participated in for nearly four years. However, if an IPL team selects Archer, a probable outcome given his standing as one of the world’s top pacemen, his path to a return to Test cricket appears more challenging. Archer would be required to demonstrate his fitness playing for Sussex in the County Championship, but the initial stages of that season coincide with the IPL schedule. Should Archer miss domestic red-ball cricket at the start of the summer, it would diminish his prospects of playing in a home Test in 2025 and raise questions about his potential involvement in the Ashes series in Australia next winter. All players with central contracts from England were granted permission to enter the auction. Archer’s inclusion would make him the 38th English player in the auction, alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler and 42-year-old James Anderson. Anderson, who holds the record as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker, has never participated in an overseas franchise league. Test captain Ben Stokes, fellow fast bowler Mark Wood, and batter Joe Root are all notable absentees from the auction.
