The transformation of a former glassworks site into an industrial estate has received official approval. Sunderland City Council sanctioned the multimillion-pound project, which will be situated on land at Deptford Terrace, close to the Queen Alexandra Bridge. The location has remained unoccupied for over ten years; however, expectations are that this development will facilitate the generation of approximately 325 employment opportunities. Councillor Martyn Herron commented that a drive-through coffee shop, also slated for the site, might evolve into “the place to be to spot celebrities” given its proximity to the Crown Works film studio development. Jomast Developments will construct the estate, intending to build six industrial units and seven trade warehouses on the property. Initial plans submitted in 2022 had incorporated a substantial food store, various food and drink establishments, and a petrol station, but these elements were subsequently removed from the proposal. Councillor Andrew Wood, who serves the Millfield ward where the site is situated, expressed that he was “very much looking forward to this development working, as others have not.” He further stated, “This land has been derelict for a long time and it would be great to see it being used for businesses, not only for investment for companies in the city to grow but to bring other companies into the city for the first time.” The planning approval stipulates that Jomast will contribute £207,000 towards the upkeep of the Hendon Local Wildlife Site, or an equivalent alternative, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
