Police from four counties discovered over £250,000 worth of equipment, leading to the arrest of two men on suspicion of conspiracy to handle stolen goods. On Friday, officers from Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire, who were investigating a series of commercial burglaries, carried out a warrant at a business park located near Halstead, Essex. Significant quantities of equipment were seized, comprising items such as plant machinery, bowsers, generators, and trailers. At the scene, a 21-year-old man and a 51-year-old man, both residents of Witham, Essex, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to handle stolen goods. Datatag ID and the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT) provided assistance to the police, with more than 50 officers and staff participating in the execution of the warrant. Authorities suspect that these offenses have occurred over a period of several months and encompass crimes committed across all four counties. Both individuals were transported to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre in Suffolk for interrogation. The 21-year-old man has been granted bail until 20 March, while the 51-year-old was released under investigation; both remain subject to further inquiries. Inspector Andy Beeby of Suffolk Police described the operation as an “incredibly successful cross-border operation.” He stated: “I am grateful for their assistance on the day, along with Datatag and the NCATT, which has enabled us to seize numerous items of suspected stolen equipment, which we will now work on getting back to their rightful owners.” He added: “The burglaries we are investigating have caused huge financial harm to the businesses concerned and our inquiries are ongoing.” For news from the East of England, updates are available on X, Instagram, and Facebook via BBC Beds, Herts & Bucks, BBC Cambridgeshire, BBC Essex, BBC Norfolk, BBC Northamptonshire, or BBC Suffolk.
