A countryside establishment, partially owned by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has emerged as a “vital hub” for its village following its reopening by local residents. The Farmers Arms, situated in Muker, had been listed for sale for two years before its acquisition by the Muker Community Benefit Society. Over 500 shareholders, including Mr. Sunak, contributed to raising more than £500,000 to acquire the premises and restore its operation. Claire and Craig Morris, the new proprietors, stated: “People are just pleased they’ve got their pub back, and we’re pleased we’ve done it for them.” The Muker Community Benefit Society (MCBS) initially put forward plans to purchase and reopen The Farmer’s Arms in 2023. When shares became available in April, over 100 applications were recorded on the first day. By the close of June, the group had amassed more than £500,000, and in July, the sale of the pub was agreed upon, with the venue finally reopening in on 4 September. Subsequently, the pub has garnered recognition from CAMRA and has once again become an integral part of rural life. Justin Jupp of the MCBS commented: “This village and this pub have such a draw to so many people.” “It is a hub. There’s a lot of single elderly people in the village and so having somewhere where they can come and strike up a conversation is absolutely vital for their connections.” “There’s been such a vibe about it, it’s been incredible. Somebody said they were walking down the road and you can hear the chatter in the pub, it couldn’t have gone better.” Proprietors Claire and Craig Morris relocated from Dudley to the Yorkshire Dales to assume management of the pub. Claire stated: “The people have been so welcoming, friendly and helpful, it’s just a fantastic way of life.” “People are just pleased they’ve got their pub back and we’re pleased we’ve done it for them.” In February, Mr. Sunak, speaking in support of the buyout, remarked: “The village pub is so important in a rural area – not just economically in terms of providing employment – but in bringing people together and providing a focus for a strong community.” Mrs. Morris observed that the pub has been busy since its reopening, attracting customers from various locations. Holidaymakers Paul, Andy, Liz, and Alison were among the patrons enjoying ham, egg, and chips. Liz commented: “Pubs like this bring the whole community together and visitors can enjoy it as well”. Andy further stated: “We like to visit the small villages with character and it’s wonderful to see a pub operating in the way it does for the benefit of the community.”
