Despite a 3-1 defeat to league leaders Linfield in Sunday’s Irish Premiership match at Taylors Avenue, Carrick Rangers manager Stephen Baxter commended his players for a “monumental effort.” Baxter commented that Joe Crowe’s early goal for Carrick “probably hindered us a bit because Linfield then came at us in waves.” Carrick maintained their lead until Kyle McClean scored Linfield’s equaliser in the 77th minute. Joel Cooper then put the Blues in front two minutes later, followed by Chris Shields’ penalty in injury time. Baxter stated, “I was always fearful that once one goal went in, you might see one or two following after that because it’s very hard to sustain that pressure and defend the way you have to defend when you are up against a team like Linfield.” He further added, “I said before the match, it’s like a juggernaut coming at you and that’s exactly what it is. And you have to credit Linfield for hanging in there and finding the solution which they did.” This loss marked Baxter’s first defeat since he assumed the Carrick managerial position last month. Reflecting on his tenure, Baxter remarked, “The last four weeks this team have worked exceptionally hard. I’ve very proud of what they’ve achieved thus far.” He also acknowledged the team’s constraints, stating, “We have a very limited squad right now in player availability etc. You work with what you have and I’m proud of the effort.” Post navigation Hearts’ Kenneth Vargas Expresses Desire for Higher-Level Football Arsenal’s Goalless Draw: Does the Club Need a Striker?
