Young academy defender Josh Acheampong has rejoined Chelsea’s first-team training sessions in preparation for an upcoming trip to Heidenheim for a Conference League fixture. The 18-year-old player appeared close to a first-team breakthrough under manager Enzo Maresca, but a disagreement regarding a new contract resulted in his exclusion from the team since late September. For more than two months, Acheampong has not participated in matches for either Chelsea’s senior squad or its academy teams. The unusual decision to pressure Acheampong, who still has over 18 months remaining on his current contract, drew attention in certain circles; however, his return to senior training could be seen as a favorable turn of events. Acheampong, who played a key role in pre-season and featured for the first team against Barrow earlier this season, may have benefited from a shift in circumstances partly due to injuries sustained by Reece James and Malo Gusto. He is considered the immediate successor at right-back when those two players are unavailable. Given the limited player options available to Maresca and the upcoming match against a less formidable opponent, this scenario would typically be regarded as a chance for Acheampong to advance his development. Several prominent first-team players were absent from Chelsea’s open training session today, indicating that significant squad rotation is anticipated. Academy players Kiano Dyer, Shim Mhueka, and Tyrique George also participated in the training group. Maresca is expected to face questions regarding Acheampong during his press conference in Germany tonight at 7pm.
