The current mayor of Northampton has announced his departure from the Labour Party, opting instead to serve as an unaligned independent. Paul Joyce, who represents the Headlands ward on the West Northamptonshire Council, currently holds the position of town mayor for the present year. He disclosed that his candidacy for the upcoming local elections in May was not renewed last month. “I feel I’ve worked hard and decided, for the last four or five months, I would sit as an independent,” he explained. Mr. Joyce has accumulated nearly eight years of experience as a councillor, including service on the town council and the former Northampton Borough Council, which has since been dissolved. In response, the Labour group within the local authority issued a statement characterizing the development as “sad news”. It further stated: “Paul has been an active and dedicated member of the group on both West Northants and Northampton borough councils for many years, especially on his passions of the environment and workers’ rights.” The statement concluded: “We are sad to see Paul go and wish him all the best representing residents in his beloved Headlands as an independent councillor.”
