American tennis player Frances Tiafoe, whose best Grand Slam performance includes reaching the US Open semi-finals in 2022 and 2024, has been issued a $120,000 (£94,737) fine. This penalty stems from a vehement outburst, during which he repeatedly swore at the chair umpire, at last month’s Shanghai Masters. Tiafoe exhibited an angry reaction towards Jimmy Pinoargote after his 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-5) loss to Russia’s Roman Safiullin. The world number 18 was assessed a $60,000 fine for aggravated behavior, in addition to the maximum $60,000 fine for verbal abuse. He was also facing a potential suspension from play, but the ATP ultimately chose not to ban the player. The 26-year-old Tiafoe later apologized for his actions, stating that his behavior was “not acceptable”. His outburst occurred at the conclusion of a match where a pivotal moment involved the American receiving a time violation at 5-5 in the final-set tie-break. The two-time US Open semi-finalist contended that he had tossed the ball to serve, but Pinoargote disagreed that it was a legitimate throw intended to commence the point and subsequently penalized him. Forced to initiate with a second serve, Tiafoe lost the point, falling behind 6-5, and Safiullin secured the victory on his first attempt. As Tiafoe proceeded towards the umpire’s chair, he directed a barrage of expletives at Pinoargote in a prolonged display of anger.
