A financially challenged local authority has once more invited local organizations to submit expressions of interest for assuming responsibility for a community center. Woking Borough Council characterized this as an “exciting opportunity” to operate the Moorcroft community centre, located in Westfield, highlighting its “spacious hall, welcoming café area and versatile facilities”. The council, which effectively announced its insolvency in June 2023, is transferring the management of community assets as part of its efforts to achieve budget reductions. The council stated that this transfer would enable resources to be concentrated on essential services. In July, the council had previously encouraged voluntary and local organizations to assume control of community centers in St Mary’s, Byfleet, and Parkview, Sheerwater, in addition to Moorcroft. Councillor Steve Greentree commented, “This initiative will empower local groups to transform community spaces and ensure they remain open to residents.” He added, “We are excited to hear from organisations ready to step forward and take on this vital role.” A spokesperson for the council indicated that the appeal was initiated following the withdrawal of groups that had previously expressed interest. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is January 27.
