Having already secured titles in San Diego and Nottingham this season, Britain’s Katie Boulter achieved a straightforward victory over Japan’s Aoi Ito, advancing to the second round of the Hong Kong Open. The second seed, Boulter, defeated Aoi, who is ranked world number 156, with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Boulter is experiencing her best season to date, having secured two WTA Tour titles and achieving a career-high ranking of 27 globally. Following the match, the 28-year-old expressed gratitude to the spectators for their support, stating that she “needed a push” after competing in the semi-finals in Tokyo only three days prior. “It’s at the end of a long season and I am trying to push my body and myself as much as possible,” she commented. Boulter is scheduled to compete against China’s Wang Xiyu for a spot in the quarter-finals. In the same tournament, fellow Briton Heather Watson was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up.
