Former Ipswich defender Mick Mills has raised questions regarding the club’s decision to sign goalkeeper Arijanet Muric during the summer transfer window, suggesting that the team might already possess a superior goalkeeper among its reserves. Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk’s Final Whistle, Mills stated: “The goalkeeping situation has been very strange for the last 15 months, I firmly believe we had a good one – Christian Walton was a good goalkeeper and he must still be, but we’re not able to see much of him.” Walton had been the primary goalkeeper at the start of the previous season and during pre-season training in their Championship campaign. An injury to Walton then paved the way for Vaclav Hladky to step in, who performed so effectively that Walton did not feature for the remainder of that season. Mills noted that there was no significant attempt to extend Hladky’s contract, and rather than reinstating Walton, the club opted to purchase a new goalkeeper, leading him to question the necessity of the signing. He expressed his desire, as a club supporter, for continuous team-wide improvement to maximize their chances of remaining in the league. Mills concluded by stating that after observing all three goalkeepers, he maintains that Christian Walton is the superior choice, a situation he finds “quite staggering.”
