Somerset has announced the signing of England all-rounder Charlie Dean, an off-spinner who has represented her country in all three formats, for their new women’s team, effective for the 2025 season. Dean, aged 23, developed her skills within the Hampshire system and spent the last seven seasons playing for Southern Vipers. During her tenure with the Vipers, she contributed to winning five trophies, including both the Charlotte Edwards Cup and the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. The off-spinner earned her first of 69 England caps in 2021, when she was selected for the One-Day International series against New Zealand. In that series, she emerged as England’s leading wicket-taker, securing 10 wickets. Dean holds the record as the fastest woman to reach 50 ODI wickets for England, achieving this milestone in 26 matches. Furthermore, in 2022, she was recognized as the PCA’s Women’s ODI Player of the Year. Dean commented on her move, stating, “The club has a rich history of success in the men’s game, and this is something we are keen to replicate as the women’s team.” She added, “I would love to make some winning contributions at Somerset with both bat and ball, helping the team to bring home some silverware.” Dean’s signing follows by two days the recruitment of her England team-mate, Dani Gibson, by the same club. To date, Somerset has enlisted 16 players for its 2025 squad, which will be managed by Trevor Griffin, formerly the boss of Western Storm. Among the recruits are Taunton native Sophie Luff and former England batter Fran Wilson, who is returning to the club after her previous stint from 2006 to 2014.
