Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade has declared his retirement from international cricket, having represented his country in 36 Tests, 92 T20s, and 97 One Day Internationals. The 36-year-old is set to immediately transition into a coaching position with the Australia men’s team, participating in their upcoming T20 international series against Pakistan next month. Wade will, however, continue his playing career in the Big Bash League for the Hobart Hurricanes and in various T20 global franchise tournaments. Across all formats, he accumulated 225 international appearances for Australia, with his final match occurring in the Super 8s phase of this year’s T20 World Cup against India. Wade stated, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation over the past six months.” He added, “Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited.” In his 92 T20 appearances for Australia, Wade amassed 1,202 runs from 68 innings, maintaining an average of 26.13. The left-handed batter scored 1,867 runs in 83 innings during one-day internationals, achieving an average of 26.29, including one century and 11 half-centuries. Furthermore, Wade participated in 36 Tests for Australia, where he registered four centuries and was a member of the squad for the 2019 Ashes series. In his role as a wicketkeeper, he concluded his international career for Australia with 240 catches and 26 stumpings across all formats.
