Officials reported that a volcanic eruption in eastern Indonesia during the early hours of Monday resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals. The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMG) stated that Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, situated on Flores Island within East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted at 23:57 local time. Hadi Wijaya, a spokesperson for PVMG, indicated that incandescent lava and rocks struck villages approximately 4km (two miles) from the crater, causing damage and setting fire to homes. Local officials confirmed that the eruption impacted seven villages. PVMG further noted that blazes had “occurred in residential areas due to the ejection of incandescent material” from the volcano. The volcano’s alert status has been elevated to the highest level, with a warning issued that a 7km (four-mile) radius around the crater must be evacuated. Heronimus Lamawuran, a local official, informed Reuters, “We have started evacuating residents since this morning to other villages located around 20km (13 miles) from the crater.” Eyewitnesses provided video footage to BBC News, depicting individuals covered in volcanic ash, falling rocks, burning residences, and the charred landscape left by the event. A representative from Indonesia’s disaster agency cautioned about the possibility of flash floods and cold lava flows in the days ahead. The disaster agency spokesperson also stated that the local government instituted a state of emergency for the subsequent 58 days, enabling the central government to offer assistance to 10,000 residents impacted by the disaster. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, which is one of two notable volcanic peaks situated at the eastern extremity of Flores island, has experienced intermittent eruptions since December of last year, with an existing official advisory to maintain a distance of over 3km from it. This year’s extended volcanic activity has severely impacted the regional economy. Hundreds of individuals have evacuated their residences and sought refuge in schools, and cashew nut cultivators have reported that their harvests were destroyed by the substantial ashfall in the vicinity. Indonesia is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region characterized by significant seismic activity over numerous tectonic plates, and is home to approximately 130 active volcanoes. Numerous communities reside in close proximity to these volcanoes to utilize the rich soil they offer for cultivation. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
