England Lioness Lucy Bronze has initiated a football scholarship program designed for young girls. Bronze, a player for Chelsea, has accumulated 126 caps for England’s Women’s team and was a key member of the squad that triumphed in the 2022 Euros. The Lucy Bronze Scholarship Award will provide funding for a boarding place at a leading independent school for an aspiring young footballer, an opportunity valued at over £70,000. During the scholarship’s launch event at Beechwood School in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, she remarked: “An opportunity is something I didn’t have when I was younger, there wasn’t even enough girls to play football with. Nowadays, things are changing and girls have so many more opportunities.” Bronze scored in the semi-final victory against Sweden during the 2022 Euros. The Lionesses’ success in the tournament subsequently led to a significant increase in the number of girls expressing interest in playing football. She stated: “I’m living my dream – in fact more than my dream.” She further added, “I wanted to play football when I was younger and wanted to score a goal or lift a trophy – I wouldn’t have changed anything.” Students at Beechwood School conveyed to BBC South East at the launch: “Having someone like Lucy come and see us is so inspirational for everyone here.” They continued, “She started at grassroots level and has gone all the way through, that’s a motivation for us all.” Another student commented, “She got her first England call-up at 21 – we look at each other and think it is still possible.” The competition is open to female players who hold a UK passport or birth certificate and whose birth date falls between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009.
