Andrew RT Davies has maintained his position as Welsh Conservative leader in the Senedd, having secured a narrow victory in a confidence vote among Tory politicians. However, BBC Wales reports that the Senedd Tory group was divided, with nine members, including Davies himself, supporting his leadership, while seven opposed it. The confidence vote was initiated after several Senedd members expressed concerns to him during the previous week. Davies has faced pressure since the summer due to controversies related to his social media activity and the overall direction of the party. The vote occurred in a meeting room located on the Senedd estate on Tuesday morning, after which the group held a subsequent meeting. Davies has served as the Senedd Conservative leader for the majority of the past 13 years, with a brief interruption from 2018 to 2021 when Paul Davies occupied the position. He assumed leadership of the party group following his predecessor Nick Bourne’s loss of his seat in 2011. He has encountered internal criticism from certain Westminster Conservatives regarding the party’s direction and its ability to offer voters an alternative vision. Stephen Crabb, a former Welsh Secretary, has proposed that a refresh might be necessary prior to the next Senedd election in 2026. This follows a weekend poll indicating the Conservatives were in fourth place in Wales, trailing Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour. Additionally, comments made in the summer about halal meat resulted in a Muslim group accusing him of “race-baiting.” Bourne also criticized a message posted on X, where Davies inquired of constituents whether they believed the Senedd should be abolished. Davies’s supporters assert that he is confronting the challenge posed by Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, whereas his opponents express concern that the party is not endeavoring to expand its base of support.
