A new organization representing driving instructors in Guernsey has been established. Named the Guernsey Driving Instructors Association, it commenced with 23 founding members and intends to provide support to its members and facilitate communication with the government. The expectation is that this collective will foster improved collaboration, thereby assisting the public and ensuring the protection of both drivers and instructors. According to Wayne Stokes, the association’s chairman, the group’s formation stems from challenges encountered over the past decade in communicating effectively with the government as an industry. Mr. Stokes stated: “During this time the States had been misinformed that there had been consultation on two occasions, implying driving instructors’ agreement with proposals.” He further expressed hope that the establishment of the association would “resolve issues resulting from this and establish a good working relationship for the future”. This development occurs after a decision by the States earlier in the current month, mandating that all driving instructors provide an enhanced DBS check to guarantee the safety of individuals undertaking driving lessons. While members of the association had engaged with the committee for environment and infrastructure to concur with this requirement, Mr. Stokes noted that “there are often issues that crop up” and emphasized that the association “needs to ensure instructors are treated fairly”.
