Stoke-on-Trent has designated an honorary custodian to commemorate the city’s centenary. This new position was established by Stoke-on-Trent City Council with the aim of promoting the city in anticipation of its 100th anniversary festivities scheduled for the upcoming year. Councillor Ross Irving was chosen for this position by his fellow councillors, acknowledging his extensive contributions to public service. Having first been elected in 1973, over 50 years ago, he holds the distinction of being the city’s longest-serving councillor. Irving stated that it was “without a shadow of a doubt, a great honour to be the first to be appointed to the position.” Previously, Irving has occupied several prominent roles, including serving twice as lord mayor (during 2017-18 and 2020-21) and as council leader from 2009-2010. He commented, “I’ve always wanted to be of service and help other people and I hope I have made a difference along the way.” Council leader Jane Ashworth remarked that the appointment of an honorary custodian presents a distinct chance to commemorate the city’s extensive heritage and its communal spirit. She added, “This position will be a lasting reminder of the centenary celebrations as a key milestone in our history, inspiring future generations and further strengthening the city’s strong cultural heritage.” Daniel Jellyman, who leads the authority’s Conservative group, stated that Irving’s extensive period of service is “unmatched” throughout the authority’s history. He commented, “As we celebrate 100 years since our city’s formation, it’s only right and proper we celebrate a councillor whose dedication to public service in Stoke-on-Trent is second to none.” Irving’s tenure in this role will continue for as long as he serves as an elected city councillor. A series of events is being organized for the upcoming year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Stoke-on-Trent’s official designation as a city on 5 June 1925.
