During Storm Bert, a couple became engaged atop their vehicle after it became stranded in floodwaters. Ashley Stevens and Davie Woodley-Kingston, residents of Southampton, were on a romantic retreat in Chard, Somerset, when they opted to drive to Taunton for an evening meal. Their journey was interrupted when their vehicle became immobilized on a flooded road close to Taunton Racecourse, necessitating a rescue operation by firefighters. As they awaited the arrival of firefighters on the roof of their car, Mr. Woodley-Kingston proposed to his partner, who accepted. Mr. Woodley-Kingston stated that their decision to visit Chard coincided with their anniversary. He further explained, “We knew Storm Bert was coming in but living in Southampton, the effects didn’t seem as severe because it’s a built-up area so really we didn’t think much of it.” “We were headed to Taunton to get a Nando’s and then head back to the cabin after,” he recounted. He continued, “We came up to the flood and I thought I can see tarmac on the other side so it was a pretty safe bet.” Nevertheless, their car became trapped in the floodwaters, leaving the couple stranded. Mr. Woodley-Kingston mentioned that during their wait for the fire service, he reflected that the situation “couldn’t have gone further from the plan,” which had originally involved proposing to Ms. Stevens in the hot tub near their cabin. He remarked, “Unfortunately it didn’t go that way.” “I decided as a memorable moment I’d do it whilst we were on the roof of the car waiting for the fire service,” he elaborated. He described the moment: “I was giving her a cuddle for warmth and I looked into her eyes and told her I loved her and was the happiest I’ve ever been.” “I said Ashley, will you marry me and she said absolutely, yes,” he concluded. Firefighters subsequently arrived, transporting the couple to safety. It was later discovered that their vehicle seemed to be functioning correctly.
