The Metropolitan Police force has commended two of its officers for entering a burning structure to assist in the evacuation of its occupants. Emergency services received notification of a fire within a three-storey building located on High Street in Willesden, north-west London, around 13:10 GMT on Friday. According to a spokesperson for the Met, officers “immediately recognised the dangerous situation unfolding in front of them, with smoke billowing from windows and reports of people still inside a flat on the first floor.” These two officers, alongside members of the public, entered the premises and evacuated residents from the first floor. Subsequently, they assisted a man who was trapped on the floor above in escaping through a window at the rear of the property, utilizing a ladder. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that five individuals had been evacuated prior to the arrival of their crews, after which an additional two residents were rescued from a roof using an extension ladder. The Met confirmed that three residents and one officer, who is in his 20s, were transported to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. No serious injuries were sustained by anyone. Cdr Paul Trevers stated: “The actions of these officers exemplify the qualities that run through the core of our officers in the Met Police – bravery, tenacity and above all a desire to keep the public safe when faced with danger.” He also remarked that when faced with a terrifying situation and aware that individuals were at risk, the officers did not hesitate to enter the building to safeguard the lives of others. Additionally, Cdr Trevers extended commendation to the members of the public who assisted in the evacuation of the premises. The LFB stated that the origin of the fire is currently under investigation.
