An 11-year-old, who is a karate world champion, has stated that hard rock and drum and bass music have contributed to his achievement of multiple international martial arts titles. Seb, originating from East Sussex, secured victory in the under-12s kata competition in Vienna. Kata is a Japanese karate discipline where participants execute an individual routine. He reported listening to the Chase & Status drum and bass track “Baddadan” through his headphones while en route to the mat. This particular song had also previously assisted him in winning a European kickboxing title. Seb commented: “When Olympians walk in, they have their earbuds in, so I put on Baddadan or some hard rock, that really gets me in the zone”. The International Sport Kickboxing Association organized the event, which attracted over 1,000 competitors representing 34 nations. Seb had previously earned a European title, utilizing the same music before entering the ring; however, that achievement was in kickboxing, a distinct discipline. He stated: “First time competing in karate and I absolutely smashed it”. Seb receives training at the Sean Kinsella Martial Arts School, which conducts classes in both Uckfield and Eastbourne. Despite the absence of a direct opponent, his Sensie, Sean Kinsella, remarked: “This type of karate translates as ‘the way of peace and harmony’, and there are fights you have to act out and demonstrate as sharply as you possibly can.” He added: “In your mind, you have to make people believe that you’re fighting, which is a very difficult thing to do at a very high level.” BBC Sussex can be followed on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
