Thousands of individuals gathered to witness the grand spectacle of the Weston-super-Mare carnival. Friday evening’s festivities marked the historic carnival’s most extensive staging yet, featuring nearly 100 participants, as illuminated floats paraded through the thoroughfares of the Somerset coastal community. This turnout occurred subsequent to an appeal from event organizers urging community backing, given the event’s financial difficulties in recent years. Notably, a Carnival Village was introduced for the first time, requiring attendees to pass through security checkpoints, where a minimum donation of £2 was requested to help ensure the carnival’s continued existence. The Bridgwater-based Gremlins Carnival Club was declared the victor after judges selected their Beatlemania-themed cart as the most outstanding. Adam Crowther of BBC Radio Bristol, who was reporting live from the Weston Carnival, stated: “The town was packed with people pouring onto the streets. Families set up camp chairs on the roadside to get the best sport for viewing the bright and colourful carts that lit up the procession route.” He detailed that spectators congregated along Alfred Street, the Boulevard, within the Italian Gardens, and on the well-known seafront promenade. Crowther added: “There was a variety of carts loaded with performers, dancers and tableau actors who entertained the thousands and thousands of people who came to see the most spectacular event the town hosts.” BBC Somerset can be followed on Facebook and X.
