The presentation of all evidence in the civil proceedings against mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor has concluded. Nikita Hand has initiated a civil court action against Mr. McGregor and his associate James Lawrence, pursuing financial compensation for alleged sexual assaults reportedly occurring in December 2018. The Irish sportsman asserts that he engaged in consensual sexual activity with Ms. Hand on two occasions at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, a claim echoed by his co-defendant. Ms. Hand, conversely, states she was raped by McGregor and has no memory of any sexual encounter with Mr. Lawrence. She further alleges that the MMA star choked her three times prior to the assault. McGregor characterized their encounter as “athletic sex.” The jury, composed of eight men and four women, heard eight days of testimony, which included appearances by Nikita Hand, Conor McGregor, and James Lawrence, alongside medical professionals and two paramedics. Dr. Basil John Farnan, formerly the principal forensic medical officer for Northern Ireland and a general practitioner, served as the concluding witness. Dr. Farnan stated it would be “peculiar” for a woman to inquire about engaging in sexual intercourse while wearing a tampon, noting he had not encountered such a question previously. He also mentioned that some of his patients have done so, potentially due to forgetting a tampon was in place. Earlier during the proceedings, the jury was informed that Nikita Hand had a tampon removed with forceps at a hospital after she presented herself following the alleged rape. The judge instructed the jury to return on Tuesday. Legal arguments are scheduled to resume on Friday, preceding the delivery of closing arguments to the jury next week. Nikita Hand, a Dublin resident, has accused the sportsman of rape following a Christmas night out in December 2018. He denies all accusations. This trial is a civil matter being heard in the Dublin High Court, following the decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions in Ireland not to pursue criminal charges against Mr. McGregor. In civil actions within the Republic of Ireland, unlike criminal cases, neither the complainant nor the accused are automatically granted anonymity during court proceedings. Copyright 2024 BBC.
