BBC Northern Ireland Releases Extensive 1990s Archive Footage Online

BBC video clips from the early 1990s, now accessible online, feature some of the initial television appearances of comedian Patrick Kielty and golfer Darren Clarke. Images depicting the inaugural shoppers at the openings of the Castlecourt and Foyleside centres are also among the newly viewable content. Over 9,000 additional video clips from the 1990s have been incorporated into the specialized BBC Northern Ireland Rewind website. The Rewind website previously contained footage spanning the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. The recently added videos span the years 1990 to 1996, a period during which BBC Newsline superseded Inside Ulster as the primary evening news broadcast. Ciaran Daly, who serves as the content and partnership editor at BBC Archives, stated that these new program clips represent a substantial enhancement to the current archive. He further commented, “It now includes over 30,000 video assets – all of which are available free to watch.” He added, “Work on this project was completed as part of wider activities to mark the centenary of BBC services in Northern Ireland.” Users of BBC Rewind are able to search for archival footage pertinent to their specific local areas. This release coincides with the centenary of the BBC’s initial broadcast from Northern Ireland. In 1924, the inaugural voice transmitted over the airwaves from Belfast belonged to Tyrone Guthrie, who subsequently achieved an international career in both theatre and broadcasting.
