Renowned opera singer Alfie Boe delivered a unique rendition of “Happy Birthday” to the United Kingdom’s oldest man, who marked his 110th year. Mr. Boe participated in Donald Rose’s birthday festivities on Tuesday through a special video call appearance. Mr. Boe expressed his enjoyment at performing for Mr. Rose, a resident of Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The centenarian, Mr. Rose, described hearing Mr. Boe sing as “very nice” and responded with applause. This video call, arranged by personnel at the Canal Vue care home, Mr. Rose’s residence, formed part of a day-long celebration that included the former soldier’s family, friends, and local civic officials. Furthermore, he was sent a card from Buckingham Palace. Born in Westcott, Surrey, on 24 December 1914, Mr. Rose served in World War Two as a member of the Queen’s Royal Regiment. Following his enlistment, he underwent training as a sniper and saw service in North Africa and Europe, attributing his long life to the salty water he consumed while in the desert. Mayor of Erewash, Kate Fennelly, was among those attending his birthday celebration, referring to the veteran as “a national treasure.” David, Mr. Rose’s 76-year-old son, stated: “Dad is just amazing he has been a great father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.” He continued: “He always worked so hard. After the war, he drove a dust cart, then worked for the gas board and he would do any work to put food on the family table.” David added: “He was as strong as an ox.” He concluded by saying: “It’s amazing to think my dad is the oldest man in the country. We’ve all had a really lovely day and it’s a great way to start Christmas.”
