Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) chief executive Gerard Lawlor characterized the criticism following Larne’s 4-1 loss to Shamrock Rovers as “over the top”. The Premiership champions, Larne, suffered a decisive defeat against their League of Ireland counterparts, Shamrock Rovers, during their Uefa Conference League match, which was a north versus south fixture. Larne holds the distinction of being the inaugural team from Northern Ireland to reach the league or group stage of a significant European tournament. Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster’s Sportsound, Lawlor stated, “Larne didn’t have a great game, they didn’t play well and maybe the occasion got to them.” He added, “Some of the criticism of Larne as a club and us as a league after it was unfair.” Larne’s European campaign commenced with a 3-0 loss to Molde, and their defeat by Shamrock Rovers was subsequently followed by a 2-1 loss to St Gallen on Thursday night. Lawlor remarked, “Shamrock Rovers started their [European] journey 13 years ago. I think we have to keep up with that and try to develop.” He further commented, “We’re trying to aspire to where Shamrock Rovers are and that takes time. I just thought the criticism was over the top.” Lawlor’s efforts to foster improvement and enable local teams to advance in European competitions encompass an examination of the academy framework and greater adaptability regarding match scheduling. The prospect of altering the football calendar has been a subject of discussion for several years, and Lawlor suggests that a “tweak” might be necessary. He posed the question, “Do we need to look at the season? It’s a big topic of debate – a tweak in the season let’s call it.” Lawlor elaborated, “Is it maybe a May start and run to maybe February as a tweak? Is it worth a chance? If we continue to do the same things we’ll continue to get the same results.” Furthermore, Lawlor addressed the matter of funding for stadium enhancements, stating that “in the next three to five years we’ll see massive progression in new facilities in the Irish League”.
