Dozens of individuals have perished after a passenger plane, carrying approximately 70 people, crashed in Kazakhstan, according to local officials. Azerbaijani authorities, from where the flight originated, reported a minimum of 30 survivors. Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 ignited while attempting an emergency landing near Aktau, a city in Kazakhstan. The airline informed the BBC that the aircraft, originally destined for Grozny in Russia, was rerouted because of fog. Video footage depicts the aircraft descending rapidly with its landing gear extended, subsequently erupting in flames upon impact. The airline stated that the plane “made an emergency landing” approximately 3km (1.9 miles) outside Aktau. Data from the flight-tracking website Flightradar24 indicated that the aircraft departed from Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday, with the crash occurring around 06:28. Russian media outlets have reported that the aircraft struck a flock of birds prior to the crash, though this information remains unconfirmed. Discrepancies exist in the figures provided by officials from the affected nations regarding the number of individuals on board and the survivors. The airline reported 62 passengers and 5 crew members were on the Embraer 190, while other accounts cite a total of 72. The reported count of survivors varies between 28 and 32. The majority of those aboard were Azerbaijani nationals, alongside passengers originating from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Unverified video recordings depicted survivors emerging from the debris, some displaying visible injuries. Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have initiated inquiries into the incident. Embraer informed the BBC that it was “ready to assist all relevant authorities”. The BBC has reached out to Azerbaijan Airlines for a statement. Embraer, a Brazilian manufacturer, is considered a smaller competitor to Boeing and Airbus and possesses a robust safety track record. For contact with BBC News, a provided link is available.
